Two years after the earthquake
Franciscans on Haiti say a heartfelt thank you for your aid
One particular project involved supplying medical equipment and medicines. This meant that many vital operations were able to be carried out, albeit still mainly outside.
A further project provides direct aid for undernourished children: children in twelve schools in Casale, 45 km northeast of the capital Port-au-Prince, are being provided with one meal a day. This meal is often all that the school children have to eat in any particular day, especially in the period before the harvest.
In Port-au-Prince a soup kitchen has been opened for street children. This is a lifeline for children between the ages of 6 and 14 who have lost their parents either as a result of the earthquake or violence. The children are often traumatised.
People who lost everything in the earthquake are starting to settle in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. The government has provided land, but infrastructure is non-existent. The Franciscans are providing micro credits in order to give people some prospects for the future. For example by opening a small shop, setting up a chicken farm or opening a small pharmacy.
We would like to join with the Franciscans on Haiti in extending our heartfelt thanks for your support.
